The Sprintcam Technology

The SprintCam ultra-slow-motion technology is based on single CMOS high-speed digital cameras. Such sensor is used for crash test images, among others.

The SprintCam technology, which has applications in live sports and other live TV productions, as well as in commercials, documentaries, movies, and scientific R&D, is underlying the development of different fully integrated systems for broadcast :

SprintCam Vvs HD (Phantom® powered): is the last ultra-slow-motion system that provides unprecedented performance in live high-definition (HD) broadcast production. Featuring the renowned quality and usability of I-MOVIX's award-winning SprintCam technology, SprintCam Vvs HD operates at up to 5,600 fps in 720p (up to 2,600 fps in 1080i), and provides instant replay at native HD resolution and image quality with a dual output for a live and replay feed. It can be specified in a standard camera version or optimized for shoulder-mounted portable shooting, providing an outstanding level of convenience and creativity in ultra-slow-motion action. Some of the new features include a dual output allowing a camera operator to shoot and record at the same time, segmented memory, ramping of speed within a replay, and integration of both live-and replay-view on the viewfinder.

A full system is made up of four parts :

(1) a high-speed camera,
(2) an operational control panel, that allows you to do all traditional color settings, and to choose the frame rate that best corresponds to your needs (for example, if you choose to shot at 1,000 frames per second, you will get a 40 times slowed down motion),
(3) a slow motion remote, that allows you to select a video sequence and instantly replay it, with still more easiness thanks to a new cueing system; that sequence can then be live broadcasted or stored on a EVS® LSM® server for a later use, or used with any SDI recorder, and
(4) a camera control unit, the heart of the system, enabling the slow-motion instant replay; this device controls the camera, receives the data from the camera and sends them to any SDI recorder. The system is thus fully compatible with the EVS slow motion servers, and requires only one channel on the EVS server, which is important because of the limited space available in Outside Broadcast vans.

All products of I-Movix can be operated out of the box as complete systems, in conjunction with an EVS LSM server for sequence storage, or with any SDI recorder.

The SprintCam Technology has been designed to fit into the broadcast environment

SprintCam Vvs HD is a fully integrated ultra-slow motion system for broadcast. It has been designed to meet the broadcast environment standards. Among the newly implemented features of the systems are new algorithms for unprecedented image quality, new user-friendly remote controls that enable fine-tuned settings, and a slow-motion remote with a new cueing system for quick and easy selection of the sequence to replay.

Moreover, whatever the system, the camera control unit and the camera are interfaced with a SMPTE standard fiber optic cable with LEMO connectors, with a max distance of 1,000m between both components (FISCHER or TAJIMI options are available).

The SprintCam workflow from capture to playout over air

The SprintCam camera systems are loop recording. The recording has to be stopped to create a HD-SDI replay upon our high-speed stream (from 25 to up to 5,600 images/sec in 720p (up to 2,600 images/sec in 1080i) for the SprintCam Vvs HD). The replay is instantly available throughout the HD-SDI output. You can directly display it, record it on an EVS LSM server or on any SDI recorder or clip it without delay even at 10,000 images per second.

Special features of the SprintCam systems

The SprintCam Vvs HD is a fully integrated system that present multiple advantages:

(1) Clarity, quality and sharpness of the images
(2) Unmatched capture speed
(3) Replay without delay, with HD-SDI output
(4) Full broadcast integration
(5) Unmatched light sensitivity of the cameras
(6) No training needed for cameraman, video engineer.

The camera control unit and the camera are interfaced with a SMPTE standard fiber optic cable with LEMO connectors, with a max distance of 1,000m between both components (FISCHER or TAJIMI options are available).

Lighting has to be flicker-free.

An ideal framerate for each sport !

The systems are designed to make it easy for the end-user to choose the frame rate that best corresponds to his/her needs. The frame rates can thus be customized depending on the sport broadcasted. Based on the I-MOVIX experience, here are some interesting correlation examples.

Sports Frame rates
Archery
Minimum 2,500 fps
Baseball
Minimum 2,000 fps
Darts
Minimum 1,000 fps
Diving
Minimum 1,000 fps
Soccer
500 fps
Swimming
Minimum 1,000 fps
Trap-shooting
Minimum 2,500 fps

The SprintCam systems are not restricted to a single lens

The following broadcast lens types can be used with the SprintCam camera systems :

- every B4 mount HD lens for 2/3 inch sensor (Fujinon HD broadcast lenses, ...)
- PL mount
- C mount
- F mount.
